Richly illustrated fourth edition (first 1855) of a guide to the spas of European mineral waters. The guide is supplemented by a study on hydrotherapy and a treatise on diseases treated with mineral waters. The work is crowned with an alphabetical list of all the spas included in the text, as well as the diseases described and treated at the spas. The text is wonderfully decorated with 13 signed illustrations depicting views of spas, including such famous ones as Vichy. The work is complemented by a fold-out map many times larger than the book's format, pasted on linen to counteract overprinting. Themap shows the spas of Western Europe discussed in the text, along with the network of railroads that connect them. The easternmost included are Czech spas including Karlovy Vary and Františkovy Lázně.
Binding, period, decorated and gilt maroon half leather in average condition with some rubbing and loss mainly at corners; spine gilt and embossed with title and geometric-plant designs; inside condition db, only first frontispiece engraving slightly loose and a dozen pages with bent corners; overall condition db.
