137 FRANCOIS DE SALES, Introduction à la vie dévote (...).
Paris 1827, Ange-Augustin-Thomas Pihan-Delaforest, 2 k. + XLVI pp. +456 pp.
A collection of reflections on the spiritual life of one of the most important French saints of the Catholic Church. St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), French theologian and philosopher, Bishop of Geneva and Doctor of the Church, left behind an important body of writing. Publishers are dissecting, on the basis of him, specifically the autograph he left, what a true pious Christian life should look like. He considers such key issues as good-evil, heaven-hell, virtue-sin. For the item on sale, publisher Ange-Augustin-Thomas Pihan-Delaforest (1791-1842) has supplemented the edition with historical notes and a dictionary of Old French words that have changed meaning. The frontispiece is engraved with a portrait of the Author, while a detailed table of contents is included at the end.
Binding in period, full dark brown gilt and embossed leather in db condition with minimal rubbing at corners; spine embossed with title; colorful pastedown on paper with gilt signets on binding leather; interior in average condition; title page and frontispiece engraving soiled at folding; all page edges are gilt; overall average condition.
