Paris 1789, Méquignon and Croullebois, 2 k. +422 p.+2 p.
First original edition of a medical treatise for young doctors and surgeons dedicated to King Louis XVI himself. Author Clériade Vachier (1727-1804), was a doctor of medicine at the University of Montpellier and a professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris. Published between 1785 and 1791, the work contained a total of 14 volumes; the subject of this sale is the eighth volume. The work, with asuperexlibris, the coat of arms of Louis XVI (1754-1793), beheaded on the guillotine during the Revolution, is a valuable white raven. The old-print has amini engraving, at the beginning of the text. In addition, the 20th century provenance of the old-print is extremely valuable. It comes from the collection of Dr. Eugené Victor Olivier (1881-1964), a French fencer, a 1908 London Olympic medalist, but above all an outstanding expert in French heraldry and superexlibris. He published, together with Georges Hermal and Captain Robert de Roton, the famous 30-volume work "Manuel de l'amateur de reliures armoriées françaises" [OHR bibliographic abbreviation from the initials of the authors' names]. The item being sold in this huge collection bears the OHR signature pl. 2496; rare.
