Paul Gustave Doré (1832-1883) - French printmaker, painter, illustrator and sculptor. The artist's use of extremely rich chiaroscuro effects and fine line in illustration emphasized the realism and expression of the representation. It also served to build a mood of mystery and extraordinary fantasy. During his life he created several hundred outstanding illustrations depicting biblical stories. These illustrations were published in Bibles published in various languages in 19th century Europe and later in the Americas. Many masters undertook illustrations of biblical motifs, but Doré is among the best known. He illustrated more than 200 books, including Dante's Divine Comedy, Don Quixote and most of Edgar Allan Poe's books.
