Amsterdam edition of a historical treatise on the history of Poland from the mythical Lech to the author's contemporary times. Treatiseattributed to Pierre Massuet (1698-1778), a doctor of medicine at Leiden University. In fact, Volume One is a reprint of a work by G.J. Jolla Histoire de Pologne et du grand-duché de Lituanie published in Amsterdam in 1698, as Massuet mentions in the introduction to the first volume. Thus, he is actually the Author of four volumes describing the reign of Augustus II the Strong (1697-1733), the Third Northern War, his fall and his return to the Polish throne after the defeat of Charles XII at Poltava. This is a supplemented edition compared to the one from 1733, with events later up to the death of August II the Strong and the beginning of the so-called War of the Polish Succession between Stanislaw Leszczynski and August III. The text ends with the events of the year of publication, i.e. 1734. The treatise, compared to the 1733 edition, has also been supplemented with 4 unique fold-out maps, larger than the format of the book. These are sequentially, at the beginning of volumes 1,2,4, and 5, maps of: Poland, White Ruthenia (or Moscow), Germany, and Italy. The work in a complete set has 5 volumes, while the object of the sale is 4 volumes. Volume 3 is missing, but there is a set of maps instead, as volume 3 does not have a map.
Period binding, full leather in medium condition with minimal rubbing, especially at edges; spine embossed and gilt with title and beautiful geometric and floral designs; interior in medium condition; occasional stains, but dry; at the end of the first volume, a dozen or so pages have xylophage holes; some individual pages have crumbling in the margins, but no loss of text; maps in bdb condition with a clear copperplate reflection, no flaws; overall average condition.
