16.PASCAL Jean, Traité des eaux de Bourbon l'Archambaud selon les principes de la nouvelle physique.
Paris 1699, Laurent d'Houry, 7 k.+373 pp. +5 s. + 1k.
Second edition (first in 1698 without the engraving depicting the spa) of a treatise on the mineral waters of the famous French spa of Bourbon-l'Archambault, in Auvergne. The medical doctor author, along with Jean Aubéry and Isaac Cottier, was the main researcher and promoter of these mineral waters. In the 17th century, it was one of the most famous French spas visited by such notables as Madame de Sévigné et Madame de Montespan. Dedicated to the first physician of Louis XIV, the "Sun" king, Dr. Guy Crenscent Fagon, the treatise includes a consideration of the town itself, the mineral springs and installations found there. In addition, the author discusses the chemical composition of the waters and treatments particularly useful for stomach and intestinal diseases. The old-print includes a foldout, larger than the book format, of Lévesque's famous engraving depicting the spa. An interesting description of a mineral water spa from 17th century France.
