15. JONSTONI Joannis, Historia ciuilis & ecclesiastica. Ab orbe condito ad annum 1633.
Amsterdam 1644,Ludovicus Elzevirius, 309 pp.
Reissue and supplement of the second edition of the work from the famous Elzewir outhouse (first in 1633, second in 1641). The author Jan Jonston (1603-1675), a Polish educator and physician of Scottish des cent, gives a lecture on secular universal history and the Church, from the beginnings of the world until 1633. The author, as a Protestant , wasassociated with the Leszczynski family, who were also guardians of the Bohemian brothers of, among others, Jan Amos Comenius, who remained on their estate for many years. Hence, the treatise is dedicated to Wladyslaw Leszczynski, Voivode of Belzhska; perhaps this is an error, as it refers to Rafal Leszczynski (1579-1636), who was Voivode of Belzhska, and with his son Boguslaw (1612-1659) the Author became associated as his court physician and official physician of the city of Leszno. On the title page an engraving with an allegorical scene with an angel writing a text on a man's back. Thetext in Latin. Very rare!
Period binding; parchment in db condition; spine with rubbed title; two string or pin rubs on edge of rear cover; interior in average condition; title page with allegorical engraving of angel torn from bottom through middle; occasional underlining in text and stains, but dry; one fold slightly loose; overall average condition.
