The January Uprising, actually the War of 1863, was financed from various sources. These included voluntary donations from the population, forced taxes, requisitions of government and treasury coffers, the issuance of national loan bonds and other receipts.
The nationwide 5% loan, which was first treated as a forced loan planned to be taken up to 21 million Polish zlotys, turned out to be unrealistic. It was exchanged for a voluntary one and the sum of the issue was increased to 40 million. The bonds were printed on the basis of the National Government's decree of October 10, 1863. The temporary bonds were printed in Warsaw and were later to be exchanged for permanent bonds. They were issued in bearer form and were prepared by the Treasury Department of the National Government. The issue of temporary bonds was as follows:
100 zloty. - A, red in color, 80 thous.
500 zlp. - Lit. B, color blue, 16 thousand pieces
1000 zlp. - Lit. C, color purple, 12 thousand pieces.
A beautiful historical security paper. Denominations above 100 zlotys are a great rarity
