Szymon Askenazy Napoleon a Poland I Upadek Polski a Francya II Bonaparte a Legiony III Bonaparte a Legiony Warsaw Kraków 1918 - 19 first edition Twarzystwo Wydawnicze w Warszawie 327, [2]; 345, [2]; 445, [2] p. o. contemporary p. bdb, stamps For. ca: 21x15 cm "Dabrowski's Legions - wandering soldiers - played quite a scene of human drama. Italian landscapes, heirlooms and ruins were the decoration for it, that it was long to look for better ones. The greatness of the main character - Napoleon - is beyond debate. But only a talent for research, intertwined with a passion for writing, builds from such material a work of true mastery. Not only for the adornment of library shelves, but also for reading with taste. During the reign of the young Napoleon, Polish interests reached - for the first but, unfortunately, not the last time - the very bottom. It was heroic to do something for Poland. Fatal realities: political, military and financial? It is not an art to act in good conditions. The ruthlessness of Napoleonic Europe, coupled with the brutality of the partitioners? That's what life is like. And this is what real politics looks like. It's easier to explore this on issues past and gone. If they provoke readerly reflections, so much the better, although it's long too late to inspire Napoleon, Dabrowski, Kosciuszko, Kniaziewicz... with them. But in Polish affairs, there is no bad time to ponder how to act "with the wind in one's eyes." Our realities are changeable, but very difficult. A classic author of a classic book on Polish fate should be one of the guides on our path. B.
