Description:
Estr. XIX (2nd ed.), vol. 14, p. 194. Historical storytelling by Józef Dunin Karwicki (1833-1910), writer and author of memoirs.
He used his extensive knowledge of people and localities, supplemented by studying documents in his rich family archive and in other Volhynian archives, as well as from oral accounts, to write down excerpts of memoirs, historical and moral sketches, which he first published in periodicals ("Gazeta Lwowska", "Przewodnik Naukowo-Literacki", "Kłosy", "Biblioteka Warszawska"), also signing them with pseudonyms or code names. Individual works, reprinted, sometimes reworked and supplemented, later became part of separately published volumes. K. also compiled extensive memoirs, the main source for his biography. He was the author of the works: Sketches of customs and history (W. 1882), Wandering from the sources to the mouth of the Horynia River (Kr. 1891), Jak to in illo tempore bywało. Kartka z drugiej połowie XVIII w., wyjęta z papilijnych domu Dunin-Karwickich (Kr. 1896), Opowiadania historyczne z dziejów okolicy Słuczy i jej dopływów (Kr. 1897), Wspomnienia Wołyniaka (Lv. 1897), Opowiadania historyczne (Lv. 1898), Ze stare autoramentu. Typy i obrazki wołyńskie (W. 1899, toż S. 2., W. 1900), Z zamogonej i niedawno minionej przeszłości. Volyn historical stories (W. 1901), From my memories. Introduction. Childhood and adolescent years (W, 1903, reprinted from: Memoirs of a Volhynian), From my memories (W. 1901-4 I-IV). All of K-ego's works are linked by subject matter to works of a clearly autobiographical nature. K.'s memoirs covered the period from early childhood to 1903, although he did not strictly adhere to the chronological order, and the flow of the story was often interrupted by historical digressions.
