The series of 230 biblical engravings is considered the life's work of the illustrious French illustrator. Scripture with engravings according to his drawings was first published in France in 1866. Doré created compositions for the history of the Old and New Testaments in the years 1864-1866. About forty engravers worked on the blocks. The result of their work and the publisher's efforts was more than satisfactory. The two-volume in folio edition, despite its high price, achieved great commercial success. The Polish edition, using a translation by Jakub Wujek, was first published in 1873-1874.
