Its action takes place in the times of King John III Sobieski, a few months before the undertaking of the relief of Vienna and the Battle of Vienna. Against the background of a romance between a poor nobleman and an heiress of a great surname, the author showed the daily life and customs of the petty and impoverished nobility in the Republic of Poland at that time. This story, maintained in the convention of romance and adventure, was in fact devoted by the writer to showing the ethos of the Polish nobility, which, while manifesting numerous negative traits in addition to the positive ones, nevertheless obeyed its main task and role - knightly service and the social duty to stand under arms at the call of the Republic, in defense of the native Christian faith against the Muslim threat. In the Bełczczka estate in the Kozienicka Forest in the Radom region resides Mr. Gedeon Pągowski with his pupil, an orphan - Miss Anna Sienińska, settled there as newcomers from the eastern borderlands after the destruction of their estates during the Khmelnytsky rebellion. The girl has long been in love with Jacek Taczewski of Wyrąbki, who lives next door - a distant descendant of the famous knight Mikołaj Powała of Taczewo."
