Lot description Show orginal version
Grade: XF-
Reference: Miłczak 50b

Unquestionably the rarest typologically 20th century Polish banknote in beautiful, unprecedented state of preservation. A variant in the altered color version of the reverse, which was finally approved for circulation, with a clause in 10 lines on a brown background and a corrected, larger font with a letter height of 1.87 mm, guaranteeing the legibility of the clause. Variant marked with a two-digit series.

Banknotes denominated in zlotys with the issue date of 1919 are among the most prestigious and sought-after issues of Polish banknotes of the 20th century. It is the aftermath of a beautiful graphic design. The printing was done at the Clermont-Ferrand printing works in Paris, while the banknote designs came out of the hands of French designers, signed by the author only on the 10 zloty denomination - Ad.Giraldon in the lower margin in the left corner.

Phenomenal issue whose beauty and atmosphere of French banknotes is undeniably present, as evidenced by the characteristic thin, delicately drawn paper, whose texture undoubtedly refers to the issue of French banknotes.

The high rarity of practically the entire issue, especially the 10,20 and 50 zloty denominations, is mainly due to their natural wear and tear with circulation. The reprinting of the missing denominations had already been carried out in Warsaw, but dated 1924, hence the first issue at the time of wear did not live to see an analogous replacement series. The entire issue was naturally withdrawn from circulation with the year 1928. Thus, it can be assumed that the pieces still preserved today must have gone unnoticed or, in individual cases, deliberately set aside for collecting purposes.

A handful of listings are known on the auction market, where the penny is made up of pieces in heavily circulated condition, often after full restoration treatments. The last record-breaking listing in issue condition was over 100,000K from the 5th GNDM Auction in 2018, a year when interest, and thus banknote prices, were just gaining momentum.

The piece being auctioned has survived in excellent condition for such a rare piece of currency.

The banknote is in printer-fresh condition, without the slightest trace of conservation treatment.

The natural, gently ruffled texture of the paper is beautifully preserved and the colors of the printing are intensely saturated. The paper is clean, with no soiling, hence the overall presentation is close to that of the issue.

Twice bent through the center and with kinks in the corners, but it is only when viewing the photo against the light that one becomes certain of just how slightly circulation-marked a banknote we are dealing with.

An unquestionably unique opportunity for many years to purchase such a rare banknote in such excellent, natural state of preservation.

A beautiful piece of one of the most desirable Polish banknotes.

An item that will be an ornament to any collection.

The Polish mark was replaced in 1924 by a currency called zloty, the PKKP was abolished, and the Bank of Poland was established in its place. The first to be introduced were pass tickets (made in France and England) with denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 zlotys, while 1,000 and 5,000 were not put into circulation. A second issue based on the previous design was issued in 1924.
