Lot description
Barac# 688; Gold 45 mm.; Alexander I (1801-1825); enammeled; with original ribbon; with hallmarks;'awarded by Karl Leopold Heinrich (Georg) Ludwig von Borstell; with original documents. Ludwig von Borstel was born on December 30, 1773 in Tangermund, his father is General Hans Friedrich Heinrich von Borstel. In 1788, he entered military service, was an adjutant to his father, who was then in the rank of major general. In 1793, Borstel took part in the campaign against the French, was in business at Pirmazens (September 14) and Kaiserslautern (September 28-30). Having proved his courage on the battlefield, Borstel gained the favor of the Duke of Braunschweig and began to quickly increase in ranks. In the unsuccessful campaign of 1806 for Prussia, Borstel served as a major guard, participated in the Battle of Jena and in many other battles. In 1807, when Königsberg, who became the temporary residence of the Prussian royal family, remained without any protection against the two enemy corps approaching him, Borstel was expelled against them with several squadrons; he acted so prudently that Marshal Ney considered this insignificant detachment to be the vanguard of the Prussian army, and agreed to conclude a truce. Then Borstel went to Swedish Pomerania and took command of the cavalry of Blucher's corps. After the Tilsit Peace, Borstel was appointed a member of the commission drawn up to transform the army, and promoted to major general. At the opening of the 1813 campaign, he led the Pomeranian brigade to Saxony, on April 5 he dealt successfully with the enemy, and first entered the corps blocking Magdeburg, and then joined the third army corps with the brigade, commanded by Bülow. With this corps, he was in many battles, but especially distinguished himself at Gross-Beren and Dennewitz. Near Leipzig, Borstel, together with the troops of Bennigsen's army, stormed the Grimm suburb, and among the first to break into the city. For this feat, he was promoted to lieutenant general. Then he received an order to block Wesel, but in December he was replaced by a Russian detachment of General Count Orurk and in early 1814 again joined the corps of Bülow, then occupying Holland. On January 11, he took an active part in the success of the Goohstraten affair, and in early February, Bülow, speaking in France, left Borstel in Tournai with 8,000 infantry, 1,400 cavalry and 16 guns, under the main command of the Duke of Weimar. Here he participated in the case at Courtre on March 7 and covered the capture of Maubeuge. At the end of March, he marched to Laon to join the corps of Bülow, who entrusted him with the encirclement of Soissons. In 1815, having gained command of the 2nd Corps of the Prussian Army, Borstel was to act against several Saxon battalions that had rebelled in the Blücher camp; he was ordered to disarm them, burn their banners and shoot the instigators. Borstel slowed down with the execution of this order and was sentenced by a military court to imprisonment in a fortress; but the king not only forgave him at the end of 1815, at the request of Field Marshal Blucher, but also entrusted him with the command over the Magdeburg brigade, and then the main military command in Königsberg. On November 24, 1818, the Russian emperor Alexander I granted Borstel the Order of St. George 3rd degree. In 1825, Borstel was promoted to cavalry general, and appointed commander of the 8th Army Corps in Koblenz; in 1832 he was awarded the Order of the Black Eagle, and in 1840 he retired. September 6, 1843 was awarded the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. Borstel died on May 9, 1844 in Berlin. In this city, he was elected an honorary citizen and one of the streets bears his name.
