A 20th century replica of the 18th century version of the Polish Order of the White Eagle, the oldest and highest Polish decoration for merit. The decoration in the shape of a Maltese cross in white and red enamel. Between the arms and at their ends stones imitating diamonds. In the center an enameled Polish eagle in the crown. The reverse in place of the eagle has an oval gilded badge with two swords, a cross and the letter R referring to King August II of Poland. Very good quality. size 86mm x 113mm
It was officially established on November 1, 1705 by Augustus II the Strong, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, and bestowed on eight of his closest diplomatic and political allies. Since then, it has been awarded to the most distinguished Poles for their merits and to the highest-ranking foreign representatives. The Order of the White Eagle is attached to a purple ribbon slung over the left shoulder on the right side. The star of the Order, formerly embroidered, is worn on the left breast.
