A set of four wooden netsuke, housed in elegant lacquered boxes decorated with floral motifs, made using the maki-e technique. The tray on which these boxes rest is decorated in the same way. The lacquer on the boxes and tray has tarnished over the years, and the gilding has rubbed off a bit, revealing the red color of the clay over which the gold was applied.
The individual netsuke are:
- A samurai holding a sword, wearing a hakama and kamishimo.
- A sage with a monkey
- Rikishi - a sumo fighter wearing a ceremonial keshō-mawashi belt.
- A fisherman with a basket full of fish.
