The head is hand-forged from Japanese tamahagane steel with high resistance to chipping and mechanical injury. Shinogi zukuri type blade, 57 cm long, selectively hardened. Hamon (hardening line) type suguha (straight). Distinctive, beautiful hada (layering pattern) looking like wood grain (ko-itame). The blade of the sword in very good condition and polish, without hagire, with minor nicks and a small, shallow, longitudinal cavity on the mune (amphibian) from the omote, indicative of layering of the wedge. Elegant, strongly elongated blade tip (o-kissaki) of 7 cm in length, which increases its cutting properties.
Nihonto from the Shōwa era (1912-1989), the blade signed by Masayoshi. Noteworthy is the elegant, carefully crafted and preserved setting on the original elements from the Edo period (1603-1868): antique iron tsuba (sword garda), round (maru gata type), with natural patina and motif of cormorant and aquatic plants. The drawings on the tsuba are inclusions in gilded copper. Seppa (separators) copper, blackened. Fuchi and kashira (handle fittings) copper also from the Edo period, with a pattern of nanako (fine spotting, fish eggs) and a motif of a cicada on a reed and a pinecone. The pieces are chiseled and gilded. Habaki of patinated bronze with a shape referring to the collar of a straight ken sword and with koshi-yujo (rain and grasses in the wind) style decoration. Menuki (ornaments under the sheath) of brass, patinated, depict bunches of flowers. Handle (tsuka) wooden, covered with natural stingray leather (samegawa) in teal color. Braid (tsuka-ito) of Japanese silk ribbon in brown-black color (similar to antique iron patina). The katana is joined by a single bamboo peg (mekugi). The sword can be completely disassembled into individual pieces for maintenance or replacement. The scabbard (saya) is made of honoki (Japanese magnolia) wood, lacquered in a golden brown color, decorated with very fine striations. The scabbard trims (koiguchi, kurigata, kojiri) made of black water buffalo horn, also from the Edo period, after restoration. The whole is completed with gilded shitodome in kashira and kurigata. The binding is very well-fitted, with no play or loss.
