Kiseru - a smoker's set from the Edo period

add Your note
Lot description Show orginal version
The set consists of:
1. Inro made of leather, rubbed in places, with a decorative texture and a clip fastener, which is in the shape of a silver figure of a man holding a traditional theater No mask depicting a tengu demon with a large nose. In Buddhism, tengu were considered malicious demons heralding war. This image has evolved over time into caring, though still dangerous, spirits of the mountains and forests. The long nose of the tengu began to appear in paintings around the 14th century, probably as an anthropomorphization of a bird's beak. The long nose likens the tengu to the Shintoist deity Saratahiko.
Attached to the inro is a polished agate bead/crane. Dimensions: 13.5 cm x 7.5 cm
2. kiseru-zutsu - a beautiful pipe case, made entirely of plaited floral fabric covered with light brown lacquer, in which images of sparrows bushwhacking in rush are carved. What draws attention is the masterful attention to detail. When folded, the case measures 22.5 cm x 2.5 cm.
3. Kiseru - three-piece pipe, mouthpiece and outlet made of solid silver, sleeve traditionally made of hollow bamboo. Length 20 cm.
