The series was painted and portrayed by Utagawa Hiroshige (one of the two authors of the Kiso Kaidō landscape series). The various prints depict different seasons - we see the road in both sunshine, rain and snow. We observe people doing seasonal work, holidays, festivals, genre scenes, but also landscapes without people. The prints were made in the 1960s, in Japan, by artisans using traditional hand techniques. Master craftsmanship can be recognized by the perfect tonal transitions and color intensity. The woodcuts have been divided into two auction items, all the stations of the Tōkaidō road have been described, identified and, interestingly enough, it has been possible for some to match the stations with more contemporary photographs of the same places. All works are framed in elegant passpartout frames. The format of the woodcuts is about 33cmx22.4cm, the overall size is 33cm x43 cm.
