1797 Edo - 1858
Representative of the ukiyo-e direction, the last great master of color Japanese woodcut. With simple technical means he was able to convey the lyrical, poetic mood of the landscape, he masterfully rendered the effects of rain, fog, snow, dawn and dusk. His main work is the cycle 53 stages of the road Tōkaidō (1833-1835). He strongly influenced the art of Europe in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
