Carved souvenir - Spa Darków {Darków Zdrój} [ Cieszyn Silesia] - 1938 ?
Wooden tray. Format : 13 x 21 [cm].
After World War I, a Polish-Czechoslovak conflict broke out over, among other things, Cieszyn Silesia. According to the agreement concluded on November 5, 1918 between the National Council of the Duchy of Cieszyn and the Zemským Národním Výbor pro Slezsko Darkov was to be on the Polish side of the border. Not agreeing to its provisions, the Czechoslovak side invaded Těšín Silesia in January 1919. After the truce, the border dispute was to be resolved through a plebiscite. The Czechoslovak side feared its outcome, since according to Austrian censuses, the Polish-speaking population here constituted a crushing majority. Taking advantage of the situation of Poland being tied up in the fight against the Bolsheviks, the Czechoslovak government pushed through demands that the plebiscite not take place. After the division of Cieszyn Silesia, the locality became part of Czechoslovakia. In the autumn of 1938, the disputed territories along with Darkov were annexed to Poland. After the period of German occupation, Darkov was incorporated into the Czechoslovak borders.
