Distillery description
Mortlach is a Scottish distillery located in the Speyside region, specifically in the town of Dufftown. Founded in 1823 by James Findlater, Donald Mackintosh, and Alex Gordon, it briefly passed through the hands of the Grant brothers of Glen Grant before being taken over by George Cowie and his son Alexander. The Cowies revitalized whisky production in the 1850s, establishing Mortlach as a key distillery, particularly for its contribution to blended whiskies. The distillery remained in the Cowie family until 1923, when it was acquired by John Walker & Sons, eventually becoming part of DCL (now Diageo). Mortlach is renowned for its unique distillation process, where the whisky is distilled 2.81 times, resulting in a heavy, rich, and meaty character. While other distilleries produce similarly robust spirits, such as Benrinnes and Dailuaine, none match the depth and richness of Mortlach's whisky. This distinctive quality makes Mortlach a prized component in blended whiskies, particularly Johnnie Walker. Due to its importance in blending, Mortlach single malts were rarely seen until recent years. Apart from occasional independent bottlings and a 16-year-old offering in Diageo's Flora & Fauna range, single malts were scarce. However, its reputation for robustness has made it increasingly valued by whisky enthusiasts. Bottle description
