Distillery description
Laphroaig is one of the most famous distilleries on the island of Islay, celebrated for its intense, medicinal, and smoky whisky. Founded in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston on the island's south coast, Laphroaig (pronounced "la-frojg") derives its name from the Gaelic term meaning "hollow by the wide bay," reflecting its location near Kilbride Bay. In 1921, Ian Hunter took control of the distillery, significantly expanding production and exports to the U.S. As a result, Laphroaig became one of the most popular whiskeys in North America and Great Britain. After Hunter's death in 1954, the distillery was inherited by his secretary, Bessie Williamson, making her the first woman to run a Scottish distillery. In 1994, Laphroaig was awarded a "Royal Warrant" from Prince Charles, a designation granted only to companies with a long-standing supply of products to the royal family. This recognition affirms Laphroaig's tradition of quality and establishes it as the drink of choice at the royal court. Laphroaig's intense flavor evokes strong reactions-it's a whisky you either love or hate-echoing its motto: "Savoured by a few, but truly loved by those who do." Bottle description
Laphroaig Aged 18 Years is a single malt whisky that impresses with its more balanced and delicate profile compared to the younger editions of this distillery. Aging for a minimum of 18 years in ex-bourbon casks brings richness and depth to this whisky, with the longer aging moderating the otherwise distinct peaty and medicinal character typical for Laphroaig.Nose: Intense and complex, with traditional notes of peat, smoke, and iodine, complemented by rich layers of caramel, vanilla, and delicate fruits such as pears and citrus.
Taste: Smooth but still expressive, with the typical peaty and smoky notes of Laphroaig, complemented by vanilla sweetness, oak notes, and a subtle fruitiness that continues to develop into nutty and spicy notes.
Finish: Long and rich with lingering smoky and sweet notes that gradually transition to a spicy and woody finish.
