Distillery description
Jura Distillery is located on the remote Isle of Jura in the South Hebrides, Scotland. Founded in 1810, it has had various names, including Craighouse, Small Isles, and Caol nan Eilean, before finally becoming Jura. The distillery's early success ended in 1901 due to a whiskey crisis, leading to its closure. Its remote location and lack of direct access to the mainland made operations costly, causing it to remain shut for over 60 years. In 1963, Jura was revitalized by Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith, who worked with blender Charles Mackinlay and designer William Delme-Evans to boost island distilling and support the local economy. Jura began selling its single malt whiskey in 1974 and steadily expanded its offerings. In 2002, it launched Superstition whiskey, which added a slightly smoky flavor, followed by the fully peated Prophecy edition in 2009. A complete rebranding in 2018 introduced a new range of whiskeys with subtle smokiness, including Jura Journey and aged versions (10, 12, and 18 years), along with special editions like Jura Seven Wood.
