Distillery description
Highland Park Distillery is an iconic Scottish distillery located in Kirkwall, on the Orkney Islands. Its origins date back to 1798, although the story of its founding is steeped in myth. The distillery is attributed to either Magnus Eunson, a well-known smuggler and priest, or David Robertson, a local farmer. While the exact details are debated, the distillery's official gate proudly displays 1798 as its founding year. Highland Park experienced significant growth and stability in the second half of the 19th century. Under the ownership of William Stuart, the proprietor of Miltonduff, and later James Grant, a former manager of the Glenlivet distillery, the distillery expanded and established itself as a key player in the Scotch whisky industry. In 1937, Highland Park joined Highland Distillers, which is now part of the Edrington Group, alongside brands like The Macallan. The distillery first launched its whisky as a single malt in the 1970s with an 8-year-old version. In the 1980s, it underwent a packaging redesign, introducing 12-year and 18-year expressions. Highland Park quickly gained a dedicated following, almost cult-like in nature, and its range of products continues to grow. Beyond its core line of aged whiskies, the distillery regularly releases limited editions inspired by Orkney's rich history and Norse mythology.
