Ay, Champagne
Comments
Champagne extraordinary, in the full sense of the word. It is made from fruit harvested from vines that remember the days before phylloxera. They overgrow two fenced-off small plots of land, Clos Saint-Jacques and Chaudes-Terres, which miraculously escaped destruction by phylloxera.
Their roots run as deep into this unique habitat as they do into the history of French winemaking. Those lucky enough to sip this champagne discover the wine of yesterday, the wine of bygone times, which Bollinger, thanks to his craftsmanship, makes ever present.
The golden color, deep, heralds ripe and somewhat oxidized aromas that, once they start, almost don't stop. Dried lemon peel, hazelnuts, walnut shell, slices of dried orange, then back towards nut cake, tea and dried tobacco leaves. And we still haven't mentioned the minerality. The body is smooth, powerful, beautiful, quite like the memory the wine leaves behind.
The 2014 VVF combines richness with freshness. Green apple alongside honey and brioche, high acidity giving energy to the full body. Like many other wines from this vintage it enjoys great potential for maturation.
