It was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson, but the distillery changed hands in 1854. It was taken over by Norman Buchanan, owner of Islay of Jura. Caol Ila is not one of the peatiest whiskies from Islay. It is characterized by a pale gold color and a pungent aroma, reminiscent of sea air, permeated with the scent of smoked salmon, with a faint floral and peppery note. The taste is sweet with a noticeable peaty-smoky aftertaste. The First Editions Caol Ila is a single malt of Scottish origin from the Isley region.
