[HERBERT Zbigniew]. Postcard with handwritten correspondence from Zbigniew Herbert to Zdzislaw Najder in Warsaw, dated. 28 XI 1975 in Olevano Romano (Italy).
Colorful scenic postcard with a photo of Olevano Romano. Herbert apologizes for the delay in correspondence, writing: "I'm in the works up to my ears. I am reworking the draft of 'The Latin Lesson' with your remarks in mind, there is not a stone left of what I wrote. I hope to be able to send you the manuscript in December." He reports on his upcoming plans: "Next week I'm flying to Frankfurt and Berlin to honor Rilke." He ends with an excerpt: "I am very grateful to you for your comments about my recent poems. I took the cautions to heart, but it seems to me that my spring is not quite dry yet [...]. Besides, you must get used to the fact that I am monothematic, and I do not promise to improve, my Scorpion." He concludes by greeting and signing "your / your Zbigniew". Folded corner of card, otherwise good condition.
The essay "Latin Lesson" was originally included in the volume "Labyrinth by the Sea," the typescript of which Herbert submitted to Czytelnik in 1973. The book never appeared in print, and after martial law was declared in 1981, his wife picked up the typescript from the publishing house. As it seems, the text of "The Latin Lesson" never received a final author's version. It first appeared in the pages of "Zeszyty Literackie" in 2000. Extensively about the fate of the essay is written by W. Gruchala in the work "Interrupted Sketch. On the formation of 'Lesson of Latin'" (in it he does not mention Najder's comments on the text).
Z. Herbert (1924-1998) - poet, essayist, playwright, author of radio plays, serious contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Knight of the Order of the White Eagle. Contrary to what we read in "Who's Who in Poland" (War. 1989), he was not a recipient of the International Lenin Prize.
