MICKIEWICZ Adam - Ad Napoleonem III. Caesarem Augusatum ode in Bomersundum captum. Polish translation by Mikołaj Epstein. Lvov 1887. by W. Bełza and F. Konarski. 16d, pp. [4]. Pg. publisher.
Abrasions of the cover, good condition inside. Stamp. Francis Konarski and Tow. im. A. Mickiewicza. The commemorative "Ode" (in Latin) was written and published separately in 1855, constituting Mickiewicz's last work published during his lifetime. In this poem, "no longer the creator of 'Dziady' and 'Pan Tadeusz' spoke, but a former Lausanne professor, in the old Roman tongue" (Semkowicz 229). The ode was written on the news of the success of the Anglo-French army in the Crimean War - the capture of the Russian fortress of Bomarsund on the Åland Islands. "A few months after [...] the publication of ["Ode"], Karol Sienkiewicz translated it into Polish; his translation was placed by 'Wiadomości Polskie' [...] in Paris [...]. Later, the ode was translated by: Wiktor Baworowski (Tarnopol 1863) and Nikolai Epstein (Lviv 1887). The original edition of 'Ode to Napoleon III' is very rare; also rare, though to a lesser extent, are all its translations, published in a negligible number of pieces" (Semkowicz 229-230). This translation came out, according to a note at the end, in 50 pieces, "as a manuscript."
