The book, first published in 1933, was the author's return to writing after years of difficult life experiences and also his greatest success. It is a fictionalized story about the creator and head of the Soviet security organs, who became a symbol of cruelty and terror, which earned him the infamous nicknames Red Executioner or Bloody Felix. In addition to a portrait of the most famous Chekist, the book shows the reality of life at the end of tsarist Russia and during the revolution, as well as the backstage and methods of operation of the repression apparatus created by Dzerzhinsky.
