Banach 594. Slight rubbing of edges of covers, clear browning of paper in places. Stamp. "Polnische Bibliothek Breslau." The plates were reproduced in toned lithography; they depict mainly portraits of reigning monarchs, also a pilgrim, St. Adalbert, Jan Kochanowski, Jan Tarnowski and Stefan Czarniecki. The drawings of the outstanding wood engraver W. Smokowski, far from those to which Matejko accustomed us, were used as the basis, "intended for the people, and authentic ones at that" (Banach, p. 380). The book presented the history of Poland in chronological order in an accessible way. The author wrote of her "Pilgrim": "The initial enlightenment, according to me, should be easy and encouraging. There is no need for it to scare off rural readers with a difficult concept for them, when they should be looking for fun in this reading." The book pi first appeared in 1818.
