Biography
Leopold Loeffler began his studies at the Faculty of Philosophy of Lviv University. He interrupted them and went to Vienna where, in 1845-46, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there with F. G. Waldmüller, and later studied some more at the Munich academy and in Paris. After returning from Paris (1867), he lived in Vienna for ten years. Among other things, he painted for the Emperor, as well as Princes Esterhaze and Ausperg. He was friends with Polish painters studying at the Vienna academy: A. Grottger, Juliusz Kossak and F. Tepa. He often traveled to the country visiting Lviv, Krakow and Radymno, where he spent his youthful years. In 1864 he became a member of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. After returning to Poland in 1877-97, he was a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow. Among his students were Z. Jasinski, W. Weiss, W. Wodzinowski and S. Wyspianski. He painted genre and historical paintings, which were very popular both at home and in Austria and Hungary, as well as portraits.
