Poland's most famous goldsmith. The son of an immigrant from Saxony and the daughter of a Warsaw goldsmith, Anna Dorota Bandau. He was initially apprenticed to the Warsaw goldsmith Jan Maciej Szwarc. Between 1818 and 27 he practiced in workshops in France, Italy, England, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Hungary. After returning to Warsaw, he opened his own workshop and store. He made silver trays, platters, sugar bowls, salt cellars and other tableware, tea pots, teapots, candlesticks, candelabras, cutlery, etc. He received many awards for his wares and developed his workshop into a large company, employing 50 people, including professional artists. However, most of the wares were designed and many of them made by him personally. Malcz's early works are made in the Empire style, later works are often Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Rococo, while late works become more eclectic. In 1864, Karl Malcz handed over the management of the studio to his partner August Theodor Werner.
