"This poem [...] presents a story that has become one of the most important heroic myths in Polish culture" (Enc. Mick. 456). The work was written in early 1832 based on the account of Stefan Garczyński, who was General Umiński's adjutant in the November Uprising. "Ordon's Redoubt" was first published in a secret Ossolineum printing in 1832 from one of the numerous copies of the work circulating among readers. A year later, also without the author's knowledge, his poem was included in the book "Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz's Last Rhymes" (see above). The volume presented here contains the first authorized edition of "Reduta Ordona. " Mickiewicz annotated it with a note: "This poem, written under the influence of Garczyński's stories, I place between the works of a friend as our common property. I dedicated it to the last Polish leader, who did not despair about our cause and wanted to fight to the end."
