The encyclopedia was published in 12 volumes (13, supplement, in 1970), a volume of about 2,000 publication sheets and a print run of 178,000 copies; contains 75,000 entries, 12,000 illustrations, 200 color and 650 black-and-white illustrated inserts and 120 color maps on 10715 pages; despite widespread censorship during the communist era, it was widely discussed socially, the supplement issued as a result of the discussion contains 1,500 additional entries; until 2005, the largest Polish universal encyclopedia published after World War II.
