The Trzebnica monastery was founded by Duke Henry the Bearded in 1202 at the instigation of Jadwiga. Cistercian nuns from Bamberg were brought to it on January 22, 1203. Because of the presence of St. Hedwig's tomb in the basilica, it became a sanctuary from the beginning of the 14th century. Today's monastery of the Borromean Sisters was built in the years: 1696-1726 on the site of the original one. It is among the largest monastery buildings in Central Europe.
