Francis Xavier LAMPI
1782 Klagenfurt - 1852 Warsaw
The confidence radiating from the model and the elegant attire indicate the high social position of the portrayed. His status can be attested to by the fact that Franz Xavier Lampi painted him. The painter was associated with Warsaw for most of his creative life and was among the most important artists of Polish portrait painting of the 19th century. He came from an Italian family of artists. He was born in Austria as the son of Jan Baptist, also a painter and prominent portraitist. In 1815 Francis Xavier took the territory of the former Republic as his homeland. He became a sought-after artist, painting likenesses of the most prominent personalities of his time. His clients included members of such families as the Wielopolscy, Sapieha, Lubomirski, Jabłonowski, Radziwill and Czartoryski. In addition to his usual method of acquiring clients, relying on the opinion that was passed around about him, he also used newspapers. Advertisements advertising his portrait services appeared in Warsaw and Cracow magazines.
