JERZY RYSZARD "JURRY" ZIELIŃSKI
(1943 Kazimierzów- 1980 Warsaw)
A classic of Polish contemporary art. One of the most important representatives of European pop art. His painting was described by English critics as "cold war pop". Born in a village near Paradyż in Podkielce in 1943, he graduated from the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in 1968 with a diploma in the studio of Jan Cybis. In his third year, he founded the Neo-Neo-Neo Group with Jan Dobkowski, whose debut was a great success. The artists were inspired by Pop Art and Art Nouveau - flat, biological forms drawn with decorative line. After college, each went his own way. Jurry practiced meta-political art, using a simple poster style taken from the language of propaganda, and uncompromisingly criticized communism. He died in Warsaw, under circumstances that are still unexplained, at the age of 37. His paintings from the mid-1970s have been called "road signs of political existence in the People's Republic of Poland."
