Austrian painter and graphic artist of the 20th century. Came from Lower Austria, lived in Tyrol since the age of ten. Son of the painter Karl Honeder. Studied from 1923 to 1930 at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna with Eugen Steinhof and Bertold Löffler. From 1931 in Innsbruck, travels to Italy, among other places. Processed influences of Expressionism, French Modernism, French Fauvism and Tyrolean folk art. Created numerous mosaics, murals and graffiti for Kunst am Bau projects. Examination of tradition and Tyrolean customs, especially landscapes with mountain and mountain depictions such as the Kalkkögel in the Stubai Alps with Schlicker Seespitze and Ampferstein.

Honeder came from an artistically gifted family. His father was a talented autodidact and his cousin Alfons Walde is one of the most famous Tyrolean painters today. Honeder himself studied at the Vienna School of Applied Arts before settling in Innsbruck in 1930 as a freelance painter and sculptor. Here he was mainly active as a painter of landscapes and portraits, as well as designer of monumental murals in public space. After years as a soldier in World War II and his American captivity, he returned to Innsbruck. In the French Cultural Institute in the Tyrolean capital, he encountered works of French modernism for the first time, which represented a key experience in his work. From 1949 he was particularly active in the "art in construction campaign" initiated by the Tyrolean state government and designed numerous murals, sgraffiti and mosaics. In 2006 the Innsbruck City Museum dedicated a large personal exhibition to Walter Honeder.
