Emil Karl August Böhm initially studied art history at the University of Munich from 1888 to 1891. His own artistic development soon became more important to him. In 1891 he enrolled at Simon Hollósky's private art school and studied from 1891 to 1901 with Johann Caspar Herterich, Paul Hoecker and Franz Defregger at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Painting study trips took him to Venice in 1899, to Budapest and Thuringia in 1902 and to Florence and Rome in 1903-1904. In addition to his independent artistic work, Böhm made a name for himself as a copyist of old masters. Until 1939, Böhm was a member of the Munich Artists' Cooperative (MKG)
