German painter. He studied at the Berlin Academy from 1828 and was a favorite student of Wilhelm Hensel, with whom he became friends. together they traveled to Rome in 1839-40. in 1835 he traveled through Dresden to Prague, Nuremberg, Würzburg and over the Rhön mountains. In 1836, he received a scholarship from the Academy for a study trip via Düsseldorf and Belgium to Paris, where he worked for three years in the studio of Léon Cogniet. From 1839 to 1850 he lived in Rome, where he executed Italian scenes and large historical paintings of his own composition. In the 1850s, he painted six wall paintings for Berlin's New Museum and toured England, Spain and Greece. From 1861, he taught at the Royal School of Applied Arts and at the Academy of Fine Arts and the Art School of the Berlin Association of Artists and Art Lovers.
